The Audiovisual Studies Rearch Group participates in the 17th International Conference on Minority Languages

The Audiovisual Studies Research Group participates in the XVII International Conference on Minority Language, organised by the Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning (Fryske Akademy). ICML XVII will take place from 22-24 May 2019 in Ljouwert/ Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. This edition will address the challenges and opportunities of smaller languages such as minority languages in a globalized society.
Minority Languages in a Globalized Societ
ICML organizing committee warns that Globalization has affected our world in countless ways. For example, it changed (and still changes) how people do business, communicate with each other and it impacts education and language learning. This is also the case for minority or minoritized languages. But while the world is increasingly globalizing, minority languages may face severe challenges to survive or withhold their position within a dynamic society.
The few dominant languages strongly influence smaller languages in language use and number of speakers, education and language learning, language policy and the development of language technologies for these under-resourced languages. Some languages are even threatened with extinction. According to the Endangered Language Project, 40% of the languages of the world will disappear due to globalization.
The programme of 17th ICML aims to bring together scholars and students across the multidisciplinary field of minority languages, with 4 keynote speakers, 10 colloquia, 91 paper presentations and 17 poster presentations. The members of the Audiovisual Studies Research Group Marta Pérez Pereiro and Fernando Redondo Neira participate in the colloquio “Globalisation and disruption: Society, media and cultural diversity” on May 22nd.
Language diversity and film access
The intervention of Redondo Neira and Pérez Pereiro is placed in the segment dedicated to “Language diversity and Film Access”, together with Marijo Deogracias (Universidade do País Vasco) and Mª Soliña Barreiro (ESUPT-Universitat Pompeu Fabra), who also collaborates with the research group and will be the discussant. The participation of the GEA is linked to the project “EUVOS: Intangible Cultural Heritage. For an European Programme for Subtitling in Non-Hegemonic Languages”.
Under the title “Public policies as guarantors of cultural diversity in the digital market” cultural diversity will be observed as one of the battlefields in the confrontation between dialectic forces of uniformization versus the continuous creation of new identities in the globalized world. Audiovisual can be considered one of the most eloquent verifications of this confrontation: while English spoken goods hoard a great deal of the exhibition windows, the production in the language of many different communities, same as multilingual and polyglot texts, has increased in recent decades. Although linguistic diversity is widely recognised in the European framework, it is somehow neglected in terms of specific political measures.
Marta Pérez Pereiro will also be discussant in the table chaired by Miren Manias-Muñoz “The visibility of minority-language cinema in European stateless nations: Film translation practices in Galicia, Catalonia and the Basque Country”. Mª Soliña Barreiro presents together with Judith Clares (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) and Beatriz Zabalondo (University of the Basque Country) this panel.
As the abstract resumes, while cinema works as an operator for the enactment of imagined communities (Anderson, 1983), audiovisual translation provides the opportunity to promote and exhibit small films in the global market as well as make them more visible. Subtitling provides the chance for minority languages to be heard around the globe as this form of translation respects the original version of films. The research monitors the different policies dedicated to the promotion and distribution of cinema and analyses the results of real practises in small film industries of European stateless nations; specifically, in the case of Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country.
