The Teatro Colón in A Coruña was the setting this Friday for the 5th Culture Gala, an event in which the Deputación of A Coruña brought together 19 award winners in 13 categories. The event, hosted by journalist Susana Pedreira and actor and musician Xoán Fórneas, featured a performance by Caamaño & Ameixeira and a notable presence of the traditional “San Andresiños” decorations, which adorned the stage and the photocall.
Among the award winners, two figures linked to the Audiovisual Studies Group (GEA) stood out: Margarita Ledo, who was recognized for her career in the audiovisual field, and Manuel Barreiro, a member of the GEA and PhD student, who received the Castelao award in the comic illustration category.

In the case of Margarita Ledo, this recognition marks another milestone in the career of one of the most influential voices in Galician culture. The Professor of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) was a pioneering figure in the promotion of communication studies in Galicia. Her work as a filmmaker, recognized with awards such as the Mestre Mateo for Best Direction for her film Nación (2020), adds to a long list of national and international accolades, including the National Film and Audiovisual Award (2008), the Otero Pedrayo Award (2017), the Cineuropa Award (2020), and the Fernando Rey Honorary Award from the Galician Academy of Audiovisual (2022), which she received as part of the Mestre Mateo Awards. Her influence has also been felt in literature and poetry.
Meanwhile, Manuel Barreiro, a member of the GEA, was one of the winners of the Castelao award for comic illustration, together with Elías Taño and Giovanna Lopalco.
