Linguas, globalización e interculturalidade. Unha reflexión desde o galego

Neoliberal globalization tends to reduce the value of the languages to their economic dimension, lessening them to merchandise (comodification). The old notion of linguistic-cultural community suffers from the competence of the new idea of linguistic market. On the other side, globalization also erodes the status of the official languages in the nation states, giving an advantage to English position, meanwhile the new communication technologies offer more possibilities of visibilization of a linguistic diversity previously hidden. Will the uniforming tendency culminate with the definitive imposition of the global language? Will some of the great languages, as Spanish or Portuguese, find comfort place as international communication languages? What is going to happen with minor languages? There isn’t a shade of doubt the comodification of languages is incompatible with interculturality, since it empties and dispossesses languages of their cultural baggage. However, the return to the old scenario of the national language in the monolingual state is unviable.
