Costumismo, humor, melancolía, reflexividade: Impronta de Wenceslao Fernández Flórez no cinema español

The year of the 50th anniversary of the death of the Galician writer Wenceslao Fernández Flórez’s (1885-1964) the Symposium “Costumismo, humor, melancolía, reflexividade: impronta de Wenceslao Fernández Flórez no cinema español” aims to thoroughly explore how the stylistic, formal and thematic peculiarities of the Modes of representation in postwar Spanish cinema are mainly deeply inspired by the literary style of the Galician writer Wenceslao Fernández Flórez.

Regardless of the fact that many of his works were turned into movies in the period we are studying and that his plots were specially suitable to make film stories, it seems clear that the his literary work, when turned into movies after the Civil War, became a surprisingly appropriate material to be used as a metaphor of the devastating scene of the time. This, together with his way of looking at the world (critical and melancholic, costumbrist and thoughtful) expands in very diverse forms to almost the entire Spanish cinema and becomes one of the most important nutrient materials when defining own modes of representation, both in terms of plot and semantics, and its discursive and visual design.
