VII International Cinema & Território Meeting

On 3-4 November - University of Madeira - Hybrid Format

Cinema and Anthropology were born and developed in the late nineteenth century. From the outset, the film tries to capture the object of ethnology: the practices of the human being, the relationships he establishes with his peers and with the physical-cultural space in which he places his action. The descriptive work of the first films, which evokes the anthropologist’s field diary, gives rise to “composite” films, which integrate several cinematographic
genres, focused on understanding each other. In the scope of his scientific work, the anthropologist thus becomes the author of fictional documentaries.
On the other hand, films made by filmmakers may also take on an anthropological dimension. Thus, to associate Cinema with Territory aims to affirm, according to the concept of Henri Lefebvre, that cinema is a “producer
of space”. Cinema is not only a space of artistic mediation but also that of power that is politically, economically, and culturally territorial in nature.
Cinema mirrors the realities of the world.

The VII International Cinema & Território Meeting aims to discuss cinema, based on a reflection on the use of audio-visual methods as instruments of
observation, recording, transcription and anthropological interpretation, in close dialogue with the concept of territory. Therefore, we would like to invite
you to present interdisciplinary communications.
In 2023, the Meeting celebrates its 10th anniversary. It will be held in a hybrid format, with transmission by videoconference.

The VII International Cinema & Território Meeting welcomes papers that discuss, question, and investigate Cinema and Territory.
Proposals are accepted from all disciplinary areas whose reflection is inserted in both aesthetic, political or socio-cultural as well as spatial exploration and,in particular, within the field of anthropology, which, according to Michael Herzfeld, aims to analyse the primary empirical assumptions – those of others as well as our own (1992: 67), the source of numerous convictions. The Meeting, which will take place on November 3 and 4, 2023, may include
an exhibition of Author’s Cinema, namely biographical or autobiographical. The format of this exhibition will depend on what has been agreed with each
author, and it may be held in a room and/or in livestreaming. We believe in the diversity of possible themes and will be waiting for your
