06/03/2026

Researchers from the Grupo de Estudios Audiovisuales (GEA) at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela took part in the II International Colloquium Rethinking Latin America – Decoloniality, Interculturality and New Subjectivities, held in Braga (Portugal) from 24 to 27 February. The event was organized by the Universidade Federal de Alagoas (UFAL, Brazil) and the Communication and Society Research Centre at the Universidade do Minho (Portugal), in partnership with the Association of Philosophy and Liberation (AFYL), the Centre for Iberian and Ibero-American Studies (CEIIBA), and the Laboratory of Discourse Studies (LED). The colloquium was held in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online sessions, enabling broad international participation.

At the event, Rocío Sosa Fernández, Enrique Castelló Mayo, and Roi Méndez Fernández presented the paper “Analysis of Decolonial Practices in Immersive Technologies: A Case Study in Latin America.” Additionally, GEA visiting researcher Natalício Batista, from the Universidade Federal de Alagoas, took part in a roundtable discussion as part of the panel “Imagem como ferida colonial: notas sobre raça e gênero.” Batista offered reflections on the practice of taking photographic portraits of enslaved Afro-descendants in Brazil during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and discussed photography’s role in shaping ethnic-racial and gender patterns and stereotypes in the country.

The II International Colloquium Rethinking Latin America provided a space for listening and for the critical production of knowledge and wisdom, bringing together researchers, students, and activists from diverse geographies, nations, and languages who share an interest in the contemporary challenges of the Global South and strategic dialogues with other continents. The Colloquium reaffirmed its commitment to critical thought and the decolonization of knowledge, practices, and institutions, while considering alternative forms of coexistence, understanding, and justice.
